DCImanager updates: we have changed the networking principle

We have redesigned the model for connection of servers to switches to make it easier for users to work with the network via the DCImanager physical infrastructure management platform and to provide additional flexibility in network deployment. Previously we only worked with intra-rack switching, but now it is possible to perform such operations between different racks as well.

The switches themselves are also merged into a single logical stack after the upgrade. In addition to this, we have improved on their interconnectability. This is necessary for correct operation of schemes with separation into access switches and aggregation switches.

We have made changes to the DCImanager connection tracking system. Previously, PDU (Power Distribution Unit) and UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) control ports were not tracked if they came from the switch – this is the case in data centers where the power supply is in a separate network segment. Our customers now have the opportunity to track this segment. Also previously, users could not cascade PDU and UPS connections into the system. The solution now supports all types of connections. In addition, users are now able to connect PDU to UPS.

With these changes, administrators will have full control over network topology, automation of connectivity tracking and more freedom in infrastructure design.

The implemented mechanisms in integration with the data center map will allow the DCImanager team to further provide users with such features as cable logging and network layout visualization. There are also plans to refine the current changes and extend the stacking logic. For example, DCImanager will soon have a stack monitoring and management tool. The product team also plans to improve switching for blade chassis.
